United Way of Central Maryland is committed to helping the people who live and work in Baltimore County.
Through our partnership board and collaborations with local leaders, other volunteers, businesses and nonprofit organizations, we are working to identify and address issues, raise needed funds and find long-term solutions to some of the systemic problems – like lack of housing, school readiness, family violence and youth achieving their full potential - that negatively affect our communities.
The need:
During the 2006-2007 school year, 23 percent of kindergarten students were not fully ready to enter school.
More than 11 percent of students in all grades missed more than 20 days of the school year in 2006.
$18.10 is the hourly wage needed to afford a two-bedroom fair market rent apartment in Baltimore County. Earning minimum wage, that is the equivalent of 2.9 full-time jobs.
There were 5,165 domestic violence incidents in Baltimore County in 2006.
In Baltimore County, 293 temporary protective orders and 153 final protective orders were granted in circuit court for domestic violence cases in fiscal year 2006.
In Baltimore County, 10 individuals were killed as a result of domestic violence in fiscal year 2007.
There were 3,056 total child protective services abuse and neglect investigations in FY 2005 in Baltimore County.
