1.5 million pounds of healthy food. 1 big question: Will you help us get there?

Did you know that more than 300,000 central Marylanders don't have the food they need? Thousands of those same people have limited to no access to a grocery store. Our Access to Healthy Food Initiative aims to change that by annually making 1.5 million pounds of healthy food easier to access for central Marylanders in need.

Molly Shattuck, a 20-year supporter of UWCM and founder of Molly Shattuck Vibrant Living, brings her passion for a healthy lifestyle, family and volunteerism to the Access to Healthy Food Initiative, serving as our Healthy Food Ambassador. In this role, Molly is creating awareness around the issue of food insecurity across central Maryland by speaking to businesses and other organizations about the importance of the Healthy Food Initiative, leading educational volunteer events (like healthy food drives and gleaning events at local farms), as well as playing a major role in fundraising.

Our Goal:

Expand sourcing of healthy, affordable food for low-income individuals in central Maryland by at least 1.5 million pounds each year and expand infrastructure so that people have more consistent access to it.

How This Works:

  • Growing More

We aim to source more healthy food locally. This includes growing (contract growing, farm expansion and urban farming) and gleaning.

  • Improving Distribution

With so many people in need, getting the food to them quickly is critical. But we also focus on keeping that food nutritious and safe as long as possible through proper transportation, refrigeration and storage.

  • Increasing Access and Affordability

Nothing else matters if the people in need can't get the food and don't know what to do with it. To improve access and affordability of food sources, we support after-school meal programs, virtual supermarkets, access to public benefits and so much more.
