LOCAL RESULTS,

We are committed to helping central Marylanders facing poverty meet their basic needs so that they can stabilize their lives and move toward self-sufficiency. By drawing upon local knowledge, data and expertise to understand the community’s needs, UWCM is able to identify where gaps exist and concentrate on what works in addressing them, serving as a powerful advocate on critical health and human issues.

HEALTHY FOOD IS A RIGHT.

Imagine not knowing where your next meal is coming from. Or relying on the corner store or nearby fast food restaurant because there’s no grocery store in your neighborhood.

Our Access to Healthy Food Initiative is working to change this situation across central Maryland by making nutritious food more affordable and accessible to low-income families.

UNITED WAY’S 2-1-1 CALL CENTER LINKS LOCAL PEOPLE TO HELP 24/7

Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. dials 2-1-1 for help. This three-digit number has revolutionized access to help in our country, providing one place for people to call for any health and human service issue. UWCM’s 2-1-1 call center (one of four in Maryland) serves as a barometer of need for issues in our community, giving UWCM a unique vantage point for identifying, assessing, tracking and meeting people’s basic needs locally. Last year, our 2-1-1 call center answered more than 95,000 calls for help.

FAMILY STABILITY

At a time when housing is unaffordable for many and the number of homeless students in our state is rapidly growing, UWCM is introducing a new program aimed at preventing and ending family homelessness. Through a multi-pronged approach that includes intensive case management, master leasing and financial security, our Family Stability initiative will build stronger families, neighborhoods and communities.

WANT A HAPPY ENDING? CHANGE THE BEGINNING

Poor readers in fourth grade are four times as likely to drop out of high school. High school drop-outs are cut off from 90% of American jobs. And much more likely to end up in jail, or homeless, or a single parent. It’s time to take action to help local children learn to read so that they can succeed in school and beyond. Change the course of a child’s life: volunteer with us.

FAMILIES LIVING UNITED

Today, families are busier than ever and are finding new ways to spend time together — and volunteering is one way to do just that. Research shows there are many benefits for families that volunteer — and we don’t need research to know that it’s also fun!

UWCM’s Families Living United Program offers family-friendly volunteer activities that give back to our local community. It’s easy to make a difference!

GIVING SOCIETIES

Members of our giving societies strengthen central Maryland through annual gifts of $1,000 or more to United Way. These donations are leveraged across the most effective, measurable programs addressing issues around income, health and self-sufficiency in our communities of greatest need.
