A story from Elaine Pollack, Information & Referral Specialist
2-1-1 Maryland at United Way of Central Maryland (2-1-1 MD at UWCM) not only serves the tens of thousands of individuals that call every year, but it serves as a barometer of sorts; telling us about the greatest needs being felt by our vulnerable neighbors.
During the last several years, it has become more and more apparent that people need help with food. And healthy food at that.
Late this summer, we received a call from a mother with four children and without food. I provided a referral to a nearby church with a food pantry that provided her with the food she needed to get by.
Unfortunately, we receive too many calls like that, and the challenge is knowing that we have only helped for the day.
But UWCM’s new Healthy Food Initiative will change that. UWCM will make healthy food more easily accessible to the hundreds of thousands of food insecure individuals across our region.
