The grant United Way of Central Maryland (UWCM) awarded to Target Community & Educational Services (Target) will support their partnership with Junior Achievement of Central Maryland to enhance employment and independent living skills of 67 Carroll County residents who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. The programs benefitting from this grant include Our Families, Economics for Success and Success Skills.

“Community partnerships greatly enhance Target’s ability to provide the vital services necessary to assist individuals with disabilities to be productive members of our community. We are grateful for this opportunity to partner with United Way of Central Maryland and Junior Achievement to provide the training required to strengthen the employment skills critical to assist these individuals to live as independently as possible while giving back to our community,” stated Tom Zirpoli, President & CEO of Target and the Laurence J. Adams Chair at McDaniel College.

In addition to the funds granted to Target Community & Educational Services, UWCM announced that it awarded $9,900 in Community Response Grants to Carroll County organizations as part of the final funding cycle of 2012.

“We’re the eyes and ears of United Way in Carroll County. Local agencies, organizations and programs let us know what is important and help us make informed decisions about helping those who need it most,” said Henry Reiff, Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies at McDaniel College and Chair of UWCM’s Community Partnership Board of Carroll County. “Community Response Grants allow us to listen to the community and respond to what we hear. We’re thrilled to partner with organizations like Target Community & Educational Services and support the important work they do in our community.”

UWCM’s Community Response Grants provide a mechanism for organizations to request support of up to $7,500 for both programmatic and immediate needs throughout the year, instead of waiting until the annual large competitive funding cycle. They are awarded quarterly in each central Maryland jurisdiction and allow UWCM to be responsive to unexpected agency and community needs.

Community Response Grant decisions are made by UWCM’s Community Partnership Boards representing each central Maryland jurisdiction, which are composed of volunteers who live and work in that jurisdiction. Community Partnership Board funding decisions are informed by local poverty and population data.
Applications for UWCM’s next cycle of Community Response Grants are due April 19 and applications for UWCM’s Impact Partner annual competitive grants are due February 14, with decisions being announced in June. For more information, please visit www.uwcm.org.
