SECU partners with United Way of Central Maryland as a sponsor of its interactive ‘Walk a Mile’ Experience

LINTHICUM, MD (March 16, 2016) – SECU, Maryland’s largest credit union, is pleased to announce a new partnership with United Way of Central Maryland as a sponsor for the nonprofit’s groundbreaking Walk a Mile Experience – an interactive activity that illustrates the struggles of living in poverty in an impactful and personal way.

During the Walk a Mile Experience, participants assume the roles of family members living at or near the poverty level and are then challenged with making life decisions while overcoming a lack of resources and navigating a confusing support system. United Way offers this volunteer program to corporations, nonprofit partners, and members of the community as an education tool that builds awareness and understanding of the poverty-related issues facing our region.

“Walk a Mile is designed to illustrate the struggles that thousands of families in our region deal with every day. Participants foster self-awareness, empathy, and a greater sense of caring and concern for the community,” says Mark Furst, President and CEO, United Way of Central Maryland. “We are so grateful to partners like SECU, which not only support the program, but help us demonstrate that resources like financial education are critical to leading a self-sufficient life.”

“Walk a Mile provides a symbolic experience that really drives home what it means to constantly struggle to make ends meet,” explains Rod Flowers, Vice President of Human Resources Development at SECU and board member at United Way of Central Maryland.

“It is our mission to help our members achieve their financial goals and dreams, and we understand that this begins with educational and social factors,” Flowers adds. “If our employees better understand the issues Marylanders face on a daily basis, we will be in a better position to improve Maryland communities as a whole.”

In celebration of the partnership, SECU is also making the Walk a Mile Experience available to its senior leadership and management team, with the plan to make the experience available to all employees this year.
