Improving people’s health and family safety.
The Challenges:
- About half of all homeless women and children are fleeing domestic violence.
- In central Maryland, there were 12,425 reports of domestic violence crimes in 2006.
- There were 494 forcible rapes in central Maryland in 2006.
- There are more than 15,000 reported cases of child abuse and neglect in central Maryland. That represents 50 percent of the state’s totals.

The Work in 2007:
- Nearly 9,000 victims were able to access and receive the services they needed, 66 percent more than United Way projected.
- More than 140 victims accessed legal representation and received a positive legal outcome.
- Nearly 22,000 individuals and victims received information they needed to find critical resources available within the community, 234 percent more than originally projected by United Way.
- More than 4,000 domestic violence/sexual violence/child abuse survivors received the necessary tools to make them stronger.
The Vision for central Maryland:
United Way looks forward to a central Maryland where men, women and children are healthy and safe from violence and abuse.
