ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY YOUTH ORGANIZATION RECEIVES $60K GRANT FOR AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING
JCPenney Afterschool Fund and United Way of Central Maryland Award Grant to the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County

Baltimore, MD (December 12, 2007) – United Way of Central Maryland (UWCM), is providing Anne Arundel County youth with access to quality afterschool programs with the help of a grant from the JCPenney Afterschool Fund, a charitable organization committed to providing children in need with access to life-enriching afterschool programs that foster their academic, physical and social development. The YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County (AACO) will receive a $60,000 grant to supplement their afterschool programming; additionally, J. C. Penney Company, Inc. is donating $50 gift cards to each child participating in their program to help with the purchase of clothing and supplies for the school year.

United Way of America received a $1.7 million grant from the JCPenney Afterschool Fund this year to provide afterschool funding for 17 communities, through local United Ways, where children are not enrolled in programs or on the verge of leaving afterschool programs due to a lack of funds. United Way of Central Maryland received $94,000 from that grant and then matched the award dollar-for-dollar to fund three afterschool programs.

"It's a great achievement when organizations can join together helping youth develop their full potential as individuals and become responsible members of society,” said Larry Walton, United Way of Central Maryland’s president and CEO. “The programs selected to receive this grant reflect the values of United Way's Youth Achieving Potential Initiative and provide a much needed community function."

The YWCA of Annapolis & AACO is receiving the grant in recognition of their afterschool program, Turning Point. Operating throughout the school year, the program supports high school girls with academic and behavioral challenges in an effort to ensure their continued academic success.  In addition to academic learning assistance, special programming promotes positive life skills and cultural diversity.

United Way of Central Maryland's Youth Achieving Potential Initiative is designed to help youth reach their full potential in preparation for adulthood through success in school, smart decisions and preparation for post-secondary education or employment.
