PATRICIA J. (PJ) MITCHELL NAMED AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS APPOINTED TO UNITED WAY OF AMERICA'S NATIONAL WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

Baltimore, MD (November 20, 2007) – Patricia J. (PJ) Mitchell, Vice President of Global Sales and Operations with IBM, current board member of the United Way of Central Maryland and founding member and 2002-2003 chairman of their Women’s Initiative, has been recently named to United Way of America’s National Women’s Leadership Council.

Mitchell  will also serve as Chair of this highly regarded 24-member panel from diverse sectors across America including corporate, community, and academic that support local United Way Women’s Leadership Councils’ efforts to empower women to become community investors, advocates for change and philanthropic leaders.

“Our Women’s Leadership Councils across the country are a critical force in leveraging resources to effect measurable social change in their communities,” stated Brian Gallagher, President and CEO of United Way of America.  “PJ and her counterparts on The National Women’s Leadership Council help support these local initiatives and spearhead our national efforts to collectively raise more than $100M by 2008,” added Gallagher.

Last year, 109 local United Way Women’s Leadership Council groups, representing more than 40,000 donors, contributed over $89 million, a 23 percent increase from the previous year.

According to research from the University Of Tennessee Alliance Of Women Philanthropists1, more women than men give to charity:  71 percent of women gave to nonprofit organizations compared to 65 percent of men.   Furthermore, women gave a larger portion of their income to philanthropy.  Although as a group women earned 75 percent of men’s total income, women’s overall contribution to charity was 93 percent of men’s1.

Larry Walton, President and CPO of United Way of Central Maryland noted, “PJ Mitchell offers the National Women’s Leadership Council the dedication, experience, and integrity that the Baltimore community has come to know and trust.”

The National Women’s Leadership Council will offer national educational and engagement opportunities for its local members including “Capitol Hill Day: Advocacy in Action”, a one-day advocacy training event scheduled on February 28th in Washington, DC., and “Women’s Leadership Summit” on May 13th in Baltimore.
