More than 62 million Americans volunteer every year. These volunteers provide an incredible benefit to the nonprofits and communities they serve. Beyond what they give, volunteers benefit a lot personally, too.
Research shows people who volunteer are happier – and more engaged – at work. So why not grab your family (and friends) and take advantage of all the benefits volunteering offers. Here are three:
Fresh air. Many volunteer activities help you stay active and spend time outside. Soak up some sun and get a little exercise. Gathering crops at Harvest Helpers for hungry families is a great hands-on volunteer activity that everyone from toddlers to seniors can enjoy.
Future volunteers. Volunteering as a family is a great way to pass on positive social values plus improve the likelihood children will volunteer in the future. Many activities are ideal for families with kids. Consider volunteering for Families Living United Stone Soup (inspired by the children’s story), where families all bring a food item and assemble meals together for people in need.
Free fun. Volunteering is a free way to do something fun on the weekend – and an ideal way to keep your kids from saying, “I’m bored.” You’ll meet new friends and feel great knowing you made your community a better place.
