WARM HANDS, WARM HEARTSThe calls never stop. The young man on the other end of the line is facing bankruptcy, feeling so hopeless he’s considering suicide.
The calls never stop. The young man on the other end of the line is facing bankruptcy, feeling so hopeless he’s considering suicide. Another call: An elderly woman who uses an oxygen machine worries that her utilities will be shut off because she’s missed a few payments. The phone rings again: A mother of three wonders how she’s going to feed her family after her hours were cut at work.
But not all the calls are for help. Information and Referral Specialist Rozie Murphy says, “I once got a call from a woman who wanted to know where she could donate gloves. Besides connecting people to the help they need, we also have information on places you can volunteer, get adult education and where donation sites are. I said that it was very nice she wanted to donate gloves and asked her why. She told me that when she and her sisters were young, her father was a farmer, and couldn’t afford winter gloves. After working outside in the cold all day, he’d come in and warm his hands on his daughters’ faces. When he died, the family started collecting gloves to give to people who were homeless. With so much that’s not good in the world, it’s heartwarming to hear stories like this.”
The 2-1-1 Maryland United Way directs people to help with shelter and housing, food, job resources, healthcare, childcare, utility bills, senior services and more--24/7, every day of the year.
