Last-minute tax tips to save you money

Date: April 18, 2016

It’s tax day! Have you filed? If not, you may still be able to file online today – free – at myfreetaxes.com. It’s easy, safe and secure, thanks to United Way and its partners. And if you need it, you can file a tax extension.

Then check out these handy tips to save you money and maximize your refund. It’s all part of United Way of Central Maryland’s focus on family stability, helping people save money and become self-sufficient.

  1. Save money. If your household made $62,000 or less, you may qualify for free federal and state tax preparation and filing assistance. Call the 2-1-1 Maryland United Way Helpline for a location near you or visit unitedway.org/myfreetaxes.
  2. Don’t forget tax credits and deductions. You may qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and other valuable credits that can put thousands of dollars back in your pocket. See full list.
  3. Get organized. Be sure to gather your important documents – W2s, 1099s, photo IDs, last year’s tax return and more. Check out the full tax checklist.
  4. Watch out for scams. The IRS will not contact you asking for your personal information or threatening you.
  5. Use your refund wisely. If you get a refund, use it to pay overdue bills or high-interest credit cards. Make an extra mortgage or car payment. Better yet, save it – open a savings account or buy a savings bond. Check out a full list of great ideas.

Now that you’re tax savvy, why not share with a friend?
