United Way of Central Maryland Receives 2020 Census Grant from State of MarylandFunding will allow 2-1-1 Maryland United Way Helpline to support 2020 Census efforts May 10, 2021
BALTIMORE, Md. (April 17, 2019) – United Way of Central Maryland was awarded one of 36 2020 Census grants as part of Governor Larry Hogan’s Maryland Complete Count initiative. The 2-1-1 Maryland United Way Helpline, the 24-hour, 7-day-a-week, 365-day-a-year service offered by United Way of Central Maryland will work to build awareness of the 2020 Census with the funds.
“We work daily to provide an immediate action for callers in need, directing them to needed services, volunteers that can help with things like delivering food, direct services through United Way and more,” said Saundra Bond, vice president and senior advisor, 2-1-1 Maryland United Way Helpline. “This grant will also allow us to participate in community resource fairs, health fairs, back to school nights and more, all with an eye toward educating participants, and our callers, about the 2020 Census.”
2-1-1 Maryland United Way Helpline will use this funding to expand staffing in order to participate in approximately 40 – 50 community events throughout the region. At these events, staff will be sharing both 2-1-1 resource information as well as 2020 Census information. As appropriate, 2-1-1 Community Resource Specialists will share information with callers about the Census and the importance of participating. And, at United Way of Central Maryland events like Project Homeless Connect and Mission of Mercy, funding will support staffing of a table dedicated to sharing information about 2-1-1 and the 2020 Census.
In a release from the Maryland Department of Planning earlier last week, Planning Secretary Rob McCord said, “We are funding proposals that support efforts to reach some of the most challenging segments of our population to increase census responses and provide a full and accurate portrait of every community throughout Maryland. Counting each person helps every one of us in Maryland.”
“2-1-1 is an unparalleled resource for our underserved communities throughout the state of Maryland,” said Franklyn Baker, president and CEO, United Way of Central Maryland. “We are proud to be of service to the state as it works to ensure every Marylander completes their census form.”
