FROM RUN-DOWN MOTEL TO BRIGHT FUTURE
More than a year ago, Janice, Marc and their seven children lived in one room of a run-down motel. The place was unsafe and infested with roaches and bedbugs. There was nowhere to cook and the water was not drinkable. Janice and Marc both worked but by the time they paid their $1,200/month rent, there was nothing left to pay the bills down or even buy a week’s supply of food for the children.
United Way’s shelter diversion program changed everything. With United Way’s help, the family moved into a townhouse that cost less than the motel and paid down bills. Now 18 months later, Marc, Janice and their children are still living happily in their new home. Janice was promoted to supervisor at a local retailer where Marc also now works. The children have excellent attendance in school and the two eldest are enrolled in a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) program. Their futures are bright.
