GETTING BACK ON HER FEET

“I was lost when I first moved to Maryland, until I called 2-1-1,” said Tasha. Not many months ago, life was very difficult for her, and very different than it is now.

When Tasha first moved to Maryland, she was struggling in a bad relationship and had nowhere to go. The 2-1-1 Maryland United Way Helpline call specialist helped Tasha get the tools she needed to succeed, including initially moving into a local women’s shelter. Within nine months, Tasha was a tremendous success story. She was living in her own place. She had a full-time job. She no longer needed to receive disability payments.

While transitioning to self-sufficiency, Tasha had participated in United Way’s Harvest of Plenty thanksgiving meal program. After receiving the basket of food, however, she decided to give it to a “needier family.” Tasha is still looking for even better job opportunities but is stable — and very grateful. And that’s just what United Way of Central Maryland does every day. Helping people like Tasha get a hand up so they can take care of themselves and their families. That’s how we work together to change the odds for families and communities.
