On a cold morning after their electricity had just been shut off, Lauren and her husband Paul dialed 2-1-1. They didn’t know where else to turn when they were unable to pay their utility bill. Lauren and Paul are elderly, disabled and isolated. Her husband recently had a heart transplant and is on dialysis. He uses an electric chairlift to get to the bathroom, but without electricity, he cannot get up the stairs.

Thanks to the resources provided by the 2-1-1 Maryland United Way Helpline, Lauren and her husband were able to get the utility bill paid and the power turned back on as well as much-needed food. “Thanks to you, we have a lot more resources to turn to,” said Lauren. “I cannot thank you enough. You have no idea how much of an impact you have on people like us.” Out of gratitude for the help she received, Lauren requested opportunities to volunteer to help other seniors. “I want to pay it forward,” she said.
